Working Group 1 : TERRESTRIAL PROCESSES THROUGH QUATERNARY (TEPROQAT)

Group Head : Prof. D.M Maurya, MS University Baroda, Varodara
Group Secretary : Dr. Anoop Ambali, IISER Mohali

The theme TEPROQAT has widespread proposition for different working groups which are coherently inter linked.

Group Leader :
The 'terrestrial biotic changes during Quaternary' working group shall include palaeo-vegetation and other biotic responses to the Quaternary Climate change and processes.

Group Leader :
The 'Hydro-meteorological regimes in Quaternary' group shall aim to understand the interaction of hydrological systems under various meteorological frameworks in terrestrial realm during the Quaternary. This shall emphasize the vast river-systems in the sub-continent with monsoon dominant and glacial melt controls. Researchers working on the detailed aspects related to this significant system shall integrate to develop such reconstructions during the Quaternary. The linkages of these hydrological realms are a primary driver to the changes throughout the Quaternary Period in the sub-continent in spatio-temporal manner.

Group Leader :
The High resolution Palaeo-proxy group shall have the researchers working on Lake sediments, varves, speleothems, and tree-rings with various tools emphasizing the stable isotope studies. This group shall integrate the isotope records with various other proxies to strengthen the latter for its wider use. Focussing upon Late Pleistocene and Holocene, this group should make efforts to reconstruct the spatially variable response of Quaternary climate change during this period.

Group Leader :
Volcanism dynamics in Indian subcontinent group shall involve geo-scientist rigorously working towards understanding the Quaternary volcanism in the region and linkages to the past such phenomenon influencing the Quaternary sedimentation in the major part of the subcontinent. The group will focus to compile and document the past records volcanic ash fall over the Indian subcontinent for correlation and understanding of the volcanic impact on climate change during Quaternary.

Group Leader :
Quaternary Stratigraphy This is a long-standing problem and needs concerted efforts to establish the stratigraphic boundaries and correlation of records or important events such as YD. It also needs to correlate the terrestrial with marine records. The group shall initially examine the available information and disagreements in the stratigraphic boundaries. This will be followed by updating of the data and then finding the gaps and needs of such work to encourage the same. Various tools are being used to constrain the chronology, and a revision of the existing stratigraphic markers should be considered.
