Working Group 4 : HIGH ALTITUDINAL ZONE IN QUATERNARY (THIRD POLE) (HIALTQAT)

The Indian subcontinent borders the Tibetan region (third pole) which played a significant role in establishment of the global climate during entire Quaternary. This fringe region is also a transition from the Indian monsoon to high altitude climate in tern the monsoon-westerlies connections. The Quaternary records in this region should therefore be emphasized to various aspects related to the typical high altitude climate response.

Group Leader :
The Himalaya-Kanchenjunga group will encompass the Quaternary researchers working on aspects such as Quaternary-tectonics, Sedimentary processes, Fossil deposits (Floral and Faunal), proxy records, across the Eastern, North-eastern, parts of Central Himalaya.

Group Leader :
Group shall include the Quaternary researchers working on various levels of Quaternary studies in the Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh region and Himachal region. This sensitive region of the third pole needs more detail understanding in different aspects of the ongoing Quaternary research.

Group Leader :
The Glacial RESPONSE to climate GROUP emphasize upon the records of glacial-climatic response as sediment-geomorphic signatures. The palaeo-records in the numerous glacial valleys across the Himalaya represents the paleolake, peat and moraines. A compilation and standardization of these available records to further examine and standardize for a wider utility is the need of the hour, that this group will focus. Impact of the modern global warming can be examined. Being a hydrological source to a large population in the sub-continent the working group shall provide greater understanding of different aspects of Quaternary glaciers in the third pole and the future development in these sensitive zones.

Group Leader :
The Glacial monitoring group shall encompass scientist doing real time monitoring of glacial fluctuations. These researchers are monitoring the changes happening in every single glacier on a daily basis and generating a large data base of these significant regions of the third pole. They include on-site monitoring and monitoring through remote satellites. Conclusive evidences of modern day changes in many of these glaciers combined with palaeo-records can device future predication of these major glaciers of Himalaya. Focus on glacial lake monitoring, GLOF and river damming will be dealt on priority.
